Earlier this week we sat down withDaniel Mross, the 36-year-old bitcoin film producer at the New York Bitcoin Center to pick his brain about the film “The Rise and Rise of Bitcoin,” out today.
The film, documenting Mross’s experience as an early adopter of bitcoin, and a witness to some of bitcoin’s most defining, and controversial events, will be released at select theaters today in New York City and Los Angeles, and on iTunes a week from today.
But Mross isn’t just a bitcoin producer, he’s also an entrepreneur, and a founding board member of Mek Entertainment, a gaming startup building cryptocurrency technology into a virtual reality game.
Here’s what he had to say about the impact he hopes the film will have, and the future of bitcoin entrepreneurship:
Will people who don’t use bitcoin get anything out of the film?
Maybe there are people out there who heard about bitcoin and thought it was just drug dealer money, hackers, and scammers, and maybe they come away thinking they can send money to their sister on the other side of the world. Bitcoin, fundamentally, is a very empowering technology for the individual. Take away all the trading, the price appreciation, and if you look at it purely as a tool in a way its just like the internet is a tool for free speech and bitcoin is a tool for freedom of transaction.
What about tech geeks?
I’m hoping they come away from it and understand why we didn’t rush to release the film online and that we wanted to make sure everything is polished and that the film can reach the biggest audience possible. And also that they can see inside some of the stories they already know. A lot of people already know who Charlie Shrem is, but few have ever seen what his office was like.
Is the bitcoin economy cooling down?
The cloud hanging over it is regulation and how that will playout, but there may even be opportunities there, to interface with those kind of things. For an entrepreneur, it’s going to become an even hotter space, and there’s going to be a lot of opportunities, not just with bitcoin but all the other opportunities with technolgies built on bitcoin.
Are you a bitcoin millionaire?
No comment. Depending on what the price is I may or may not have been for a window of time.
Will you be able to send your kids to college with bitcoin?
Yes.
